Short Run and Lathe Cut Explained
Three ways to make your record, depending on how many you need.
Short Run, Made with PCM
Short Runs are pressed with PCM (Precision Cut Master), our own cutting method and a smart way to press smaller runs at a lower cost.
- 12, 10 or 7 inch, from 50 records
- Black, Random Colour or Custom Colour
- About 10 to 12 weeks, with rush options
- Ideal for demos, limited editions and indie releases
Standard Pressing
Standard pressing, 100 copies and up, is cut on traditional lacquer. It includes test pressings and opens up every colour, effect, gatefold and double record option.
- 12, 10 or 7 inch, from 100 records
- About 5 to 7 weeks
- Best for full releases and represses
Lathe Cut
Need just one record or a handful? Lathe cut records are made one at a time, in real time, on 12 inch Black vinyl.
- 1 or 5 copies, 12 inch Black only
- Maximum 18 minutes per side, 36 minutes total. This is a physical limit of the cutting machine
- About 25 to 30 business days, plus holidays
- Great for demos, gifts and proofs
- From $299.99 for 1 copy in a printed jacket
Size Questions
Which vinyl size should I choose?
Choose 12 inch for a full album, 10 inch for an EP or a special edition, and 7 inch for a single or a split. If you only need 50 to 200 records, a Short Run is the most affordable way to press any of the three sizes.
How much music fits on each size?
A pressed 12 inch record at 33 1/3 RPM is best at 20 minutes per side (recommended for Short Run). Standard orders allow up to 22 minutes at no extra charge, and 25 to 27 minutes with additional mastering charges. A 10 inch up to 13.5 minutes per side at 33 1/3 RPM or about 10 minutes at 45 RPM, and a 7 inch up to about 5 minutes per side at 45 RPM or about 6 to 7 minutes at 33 1/3 RPM. Lathe cut records hold a maximum of 18 minutes per side, 36 minutes total.
What is the minimum order for each size?
Standard pressing starts at 100 records in 12, 10 or 7 inch, from 100 to 1,000+ records per order. Short Runs are 50 to 200 pressed records in any of the three sizes. For 1 or 5 copies, lathe cut is available on 12 inch Black.
What is the difference between Short Run and Standard?
Short Run is for 50 to 200 records, made with PCM, in Black, Random Colour or Custom Colour, with optional test pressings. Standard starts at 100 records, is cut on traditional lacquer, includes test pressings and offers every colour, effect and gatefold option.
What is PCM?
PCM stands for Precision Cut Master. It is our own cutting method for Short Runs and a smart way to press smaller runs at a lower cost.
Can I get colour vinyl on every size?
Yes. Colour and effects are available on 12, 10 and 7 inch Standard orders, and Short Runs come in Black, Random Colour or Custom Colour. Lathe cut records are Black only. The exact styles for each size are shown in the Vinyl Price Builder.
Do you ship to the USA?
Yes. We ship across Canada and the USA.
